LIVERPOOL 2-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

Liverpool completed their first 'double' over United since 1978-79 with a terrific performance against the Champions elect.

Steven Gerrard opened the scoring with a storming 25 yard shot after only 16 minutes, and it was nothing more than Liverpool deserved. But United came back soon after and came close to netting an equaliser after Westerweld could only parry a shot by Roy Keane.

However, it proved to be a rare attack for United during the afternoon, as Liverpool remained in control throughout. Berger and Heskey both came close in the first half before Fowler doubled the lead for Liverpool minutes before the break with a volley after Steve Gerrard's cross.

The second half saw more of the same with Liverpool creating much more chances, but found themselves just unable to grab the third an put the game beyond doubt. Gerrad and Heskey both attempted long range lobs over Barthez, who was frequently off his line, and Heskey came close late on.

But just as the home side had a man sent off in the last encounter between the sides, the same happened again as Murphy saw red for two bookable offences, though Liverpool held on and other than a disallowed Dwight Yorke goal, it was very comfortable.

The result moves Liverpool temporarily up to 3rd place in the league with the other teams fighting for 3rd place playing later on this afternoon.
