Tranmere Rovers 2-4 Liverpool
Liverpool the semi finals of the FA Cup despite an excellent second half by Tranmere.
Liverpool were ahead after only 12 minutes, thanks to a Danny Murphy header that bounced awkwardly in front of Achterberg. The Reds completely dominated the first half and it was looking very comfortable when Owen made it 2-0, following good work by Murphy on the right. But Tranmere came out a different side in the second half, as has been the case so many times before and it took them less than 2 minutes to get themselves back into a game which looked almost over after their first half performance. A cross was met well by Steve Yates, and he headed the ball into the near post which eventually went in off the head of Westerweld.
Tranmere started to take control and Liverpool were forced to defend for long periods. Steve Gerrard gave Liverpool their two goal lead back with a header from a corner, but Tranmere never gave up and after a mix up in the defence between Fowler and Babbel, Wayne Allison popped up to give the home side a way back into the game. Tranmere continued to look dangerous and it was desperate defending from Liverpool until a counter attack led to McAllister being brought down in the area, and the resulting penalty was calmly tucked away by captain Robbie Fowler.
Jari Litmanen made a brief appearance late on to suggest he could be fit to play Thursday's home game with Porto.
