Everton 1-3 Liverpool
In Liverpool's first game on pay-per-veiw TV, viewers were treated to a couple of stunning goals to give Liverpool the points.
As was the case in midweek, Liverpool were trailing very early on, with Kevin Campbell striking for Everton on 5 minutes. Jerzy Dudek was again left picking the ball out of the net and after a couple of disapponiting results since the Polish international joined, he could have been forgiven for thinking that it was going to be another one of those days.
But the Reds' keeper was rarely called into action as Liverpool started to take control of the match soon after conceding the opener. After 11 minutes, Steve Gerrard picked up the ball from a tight angle, but somehow smashed an unstoppable shot into the Everton goal to level the scores. Soon after, Owen went clear but was beaten to the ball by everton goalkeeper, Paul Gerrard. Gerrard was again in the action, saving shots by Heskey and Riise before Heskey was pulled down in the area by David Unsworth and Liverpool were awarded a penalty.
Michael Owen stepped up, and scored his 13th goal of the season, his 9th for Liverpool.
A tale of the two Gerrard's followed, Everton keeper Paul making a good stop from Liverpool's Steve. Riise and Hamann both had shots in the remainder of the first half as Liverpool went into the break with a deserved lead.
The second period saw only a couple of minutes pass before Liverpool were back into the Everton half and creating chances. A free kick was not dealt with by Paul Gerrard, but the Everton defence managed to get the ball away. But 5 minutes later, there was nothing Gerrard could do about John Arnes Riise's goal. The left midfielder ran half the length of the pitch before striking a fine left foot shot past the keeper. At 3-1, the result was looking comfortable for Liverpool provided they could keep their concentration.
Jerzy Dudek was the next keeper involved in the game though, and was forced into a blaocking save from a chance presented to Kevin Campbell, who perhaps should have scored. Dudek made another save from Campbell in the last minute, brilliantly keeping out a close range shot from the Everton striker, but Liverpool held on to the 2 goal lead and can now look to start moving up the league table.
