Liverpool 1-1 Boavista
In their first ever Champions League group game, Liverpool could only manage a home draw against Boavista on a day that will forever be remembered for the tragic events in the United States rather than for any sporting event.
Boavista took the lead after only 2 minutes after some poor defending, but the Reds were level at half time with Owen firing a superb shot across the Boavista keeper and into the top corner. Jerzy Dudek was forced into an excellent one handed save in the first hald and was called into action again after the break, where he charged out to the edge of his area to bravely gather the ball. Steve Gerrard and John Arne Riise came closest to netting a winner with well hit free kicks, but the Portuguese side continued to frustrate Liverpool, not least with their constant cheating to try and win free kicks.
But this was a day when football was put firmly into perspective and there can be complaints following the result of what is, after all, just a game.
