Bolton 2-1 Liverpool
Liverpool lost their first competitive match since Good Friday, after a run of 14 wins and a draw in their previous 15 games.
The away team started brightly and it took around 5 minutes before McAllister forced a save from Jaaskelainen. Soon after, Owen created himself some space after receiving the ball from Fowler, but couldnt get the shot on target. Hamann also stuck a decent long range shot but it went wide. But it was Bolton who then started to put the pressure on, and on 27 minutes, Michael Ricketts put Bolton ahead. A ball played into the area was headed across goal by Warhurst, and Ricketts was on hand and unmarked to make it 1-0. Just a minute later, Robbie Fowler knocked the ball past Jaaskelainen in the area, and after appearing to be brought down as he went past the keeper, Fowler was booked for diving. Murphy and McAllister made sure
that the Bolton keeper was not to have a quiet end to the half but both were unable to prevent a half time lead in Bolton's favour.
Robbie Fowler was brought off after 64 minutes after a largely disappointing performance and he was replaced by Emile Heskey, who took just a couple of minutes to make his mark on the game when he grabbed the equaliser after 66 minutes to put the first goal past Bolton this season. Heskey immediately could have scored a second but fired wide of the goal. Five minutes later, Heskey again could have scored but forced a good save from Jaaskelainen in the Bolton goal.
Liverpool again looked on top, but with less than a minute to go, Sander Westerveld made a mistake in allowing a 20 yard strike from Dean Holdsworth get past him and Bolton looked on course to record their first ever Premiership win over Liverpool. Five minutes of injury time was played at the end of the game, but Liverpool couldnt find a second goal and Bolton overtook Everton to go back to the top of the league.
