Bayern Munich 2-3 Liverpool
A fifth trophy in 6 months was on its wasy to Anfield last night after a win against Bayern Munich.
With both managers dismissing any talk of the game being a friendly, the game was a quite firecely contested match. Liverpool were the side who first tok the lead though, and after a run by Own on the right, his excellent cross found Riise at the far post, who had to stretch to score hs first competitiv goal for Liverpool. The goal was extra special for Riise as he used to play for Monaco in the same stadium. Bayern's best efforts came from Lizarazu and Elber, but both blasted shots well over the bar. Owen later created himself a one on one chance agsinst Oliver Khan but his attempted chip hit the goalkeeper, who was 15 yard off his goal line.
It did not take long after that chance before Emile Heskey would score against the German's. Heskey picked the ball up well, and despite being in front of 2 Bayern defenders, the big forward charged through and clipped the ball over Khan and into the corner of the net. That goal came in the last minute of the first half, and the next goal was not long in coming. A long pass over the Bayern defence found Michael Owen straight after the restart, and Owen took one touch to control the ball before calmly netting with his left foot.
But Bayern never gave up and grabbed a goal back thanks to a header by Salihamidzic, who rose above his marker to give Bayern hope. And the game looked to be turning on it's head when Karsten Jancker scored a second for Munich after 81 minutes when he beat Markus Babbel to the ball and headed the ball over the keeper and into the net. But unlike last season's away trip to Southampton which was alost exactly a year ago, Liverpool held on to a 3-2 win.
