LIVERPOOL 3-0 NEWCASTLE UNITED
Michael Owen netted another hat-trick against the Magpies as he tore apart Newcastle's defence to give Liverpool another priceless win that puts them clear of their rivals and makes them clear favourites to secure 3rd place.
The Liverpool striker could have scored as early as the first minute but Shay Given in the Newcastle goal kept the ball out with his legs. Liverpool had another chance early on with Emile Heskey heading the ball wide from a free kick delivered by McAllister.
It was on 27 minutes that Owen scored his first and did so by running onto a pass by Markus Babbel, and firing the ball under Given.
McAllister then had a chance to double the lead just before half time, but Given made the save to make up for an error he had made by giving McAllister the ball in the first place.
Shortly after the break, Newcastle looked for an equaliser and came close when Henchoz cleared Solano's header off the line.
But it was always going to be Liverpool's day, and Owen made sure of that with a second goal on the hour, this time thanks to the pass by Berger, and another long ball by Fowler on 81 minutes gave Owen the chance for a hat-trick and he buried it across goal to net his 13th Premier League goal of the season, and 19th in all competitions.
In other results, Leeds were beaten by Arsenal to leave them level on games, points and goal difference with Ipswich.
With just 2 games to play, and Liverpool having a far superior goal difference to their rivals, The Reds realistically need just one more win to guarantee 3rd spot. Similarly, Arsenal need just 3 points from their remaining 2 games to secure 2nd place., although anything less would allow Liverpool to move above them. Click here to view the current league table.
