08.09.2001 - Westerweld set to leave Anfield
Sander Westerweld last night admitted that his Liverpool career is over. The double signing of goalkeepers by Liverpool resulted in a furious Westerweld demanding talks with Houllier and after discussions between the 2, the Dutch keeper made it clear that no agreement could be made and he would be looking for a new club. Gerard Houllier has been said to have been looking for a goalkeeper who could put pressure on Westerweld and provide strong backup in that position, but the mistake at Bolton nearly 2 weeks ago appears to be the last mistake that Sander will be allowed to make, despite an otherwise decent start to the new season which saw Westerweld pick up a man of the match award in the Charity shield, were he also produced a save which will be a contender for save of the season. Houllier thanked Westerweld for his contribution to Livepool's success but will be unlikely to select him again, with Arphexad likely to remain the substitute 'keeper for today's game against Villa, which Jerzy Dudek will start in goal for.
