01.09.2001 - GERMANY 1-5 ENGLAND

England beat Germany tonight with a fabulous performance away in Munich, a game in which a number of Liverpool players were instrumental in helping the national side achieve the victory. After an early goal by Carsten Jancker, who also netted in Bayern Munich's Super Cup defeat last week, Micheal Owen got England back on level term's on 10 minutes. The next half an hour was very evenly matched, with Germany possibly having the best chances, but in the third minute of first half injury time, a David Beckham free kick was headed back by Rio Ferdinand to Steve Gerrard. Gerrard chested the ball down 30 yards out, before unleashing an unstoppable low drive into the bottom corner to give England a valuable lead. Early in the second half, Owen grabbed his second of the night, with a hard hit shot which Oliver Khan could only parry into the net after starting to dive the wrong way. Owen then completed his hat-trick in style after some good work in midfield by Gerrard, firstly in winning the ball, and then to play a quick pass to Owen, who raced on and placed a high shot over Khan and into the top corner. The scoring was completed by Emile Heskey, who remained calm in a one on one situation to put a low shot into the bottom corner. The misery was made even worse on a personal note for Liverpool's German international, Dietmar Hamann, when Gerrard skilfully tackled the player, and then took the ball past him twice in quick succession as Hamann tried desperately ton win the ball back. Hamann may have had the final say as far as the action at Wembley Stadium was concerned, but England had very much the last laugh.
