31.08.2001 - Dudek, Kirkland sign for Liverpool
Liverpool have sensationally signed two goalkeepers today. Reports had been linking the Reds to Polish 'keeper Jerzy Dudek for most of the week, but it emerged last night that Houllie was also interested in signing Coventry 'keeper, Chris Kirkland. The signing of Kirkland was initially thought of as an alternative to Dudek, who did not pass his medical yesterday. But after successfully coming through a medical today, Dudek finally put pen to paper and was joined at Anfield by 20 year old Kirkland. The price tag for Dudek is said to be £4.85Million, while Kirkland cost Liverpool in excess of £6Million, which breaks the record for a British 'keeper. To complete a busy day as far as transfers are concerned, Djimi Traore joined Lens on loan for the rest of the season.
