20.08.2005 - LFC 1-0 Sunderland
Xabi Alonso was the match winner for Liverpool yesterday afternoon in their first home game of the new Premiership season, but Liverpool were far from convincing against the newly promoted side.
Alonso struck a brilliant free kick past Kelvin Davis in the 24th minute, though the Sunderland keeper was rarely tested during a match in which Liverpool were mainly restricted to long range shots, as they struggled to break down the visitors' defence.
As in their first league game, Liverpool were even given a helping hand by their opponents, after another red card, this time shown to Andy Welsh for violent conduct after a tussle with Garcia, but a lack of creativity cost Liverpool the chance to extend their lead, even if they never looked like surrendering their narrow advantage.
Four sides, Spurs, Charlton, Chelsea and Man United, are on maximum points after two rounds, with Liverpool among the group of clubs just behind with 4 points.
