03.08.2005 - Reds close in on Champions League group stage
Liverpool cruised past Kaunas last night and are now just two games away from the 1st round proper of this season's Champions League.
Already 3-1 up from the first leg, Liverpool's lead never looked in danger, although after a sluggish performance in front of a sell out crowd, it took late goals from two of the Reds' substitutes to triumph on the night.
Fernando Morientes saw a header easily saved and a Momo Sissoko strike flew past the keeper's right hand post in an otherwise uneventful first half.
Djibril Cisse's introduction at half time livened up the game, and he was close to opening the scoring with a thunderous drive from a tight angle midway through the second half.
But, as in the first round against TNS, it was left to Gerrard to open the scoring, although on this occasion he needed some help from the keeper.
Djbril Cisse's neat finish from six yards added a second in the last 10 minutes and Liverpool's attentions now turn to the first leg of the final qualifying round, which is likely to take place in Bulgaria against CSKA Sofia, who hold a 2-0 lead from the first leg of their tie against SK Tirana.
