19.07.2005 - TNS 0-3 Liverpool
Steven Gerrard came off the bench to help Liverpool through to the second qualifying round of the Champions League.
After building up a three goal advantage at Anfield, the tie was already all but over but Rafa Benitez insisted on fielding a strong line up.
Gerrard, hat-trick hero of the first leg, was one senior player who was rested though, and he had to watch from the bench as Liverpool struggled to open up their Welsh opponents for much of a largely uneventful first half, in which a Djibril Cisse goal proved to be enough to separate the sides at the break.
The Reds caused TNS more problems in the second half, but suffered a scare as TNS came the width of the post away from grabbing an unlikely equaliser, and any hopes of recording a win to match their first leg result looked to be fading when Didi Hamann saw a penalty saved by Ged Doherty.
But the introduction of Gerrard saw an increase in the tempo of Liverpool's game, and he was soon celebrating his fourth goal of the tie, thanks to a low strike from outside the area.
And less than 50 seconds after his first goal, Gerrard added a second from close range to complete a 6-0 aggregate win and set up a second round meeting with Lithuanian Champions, Kaunas.
