Real Madrid's Fernando Morientes has arrived on Merseyside tonight, hoping to complete his transfer to Liverpool in time to be registered for Saturday's Premiership clash against Man United.

Liverpool agreed a £6.3million fee for the 28 year old striker earlier today, and the player will undergo a medical tomorrow, with the deal hopfully being concluded before the end of the day.

Morientes attended a press conference in Madrid this afternoon, when he confirmed that he would be joining Liverpool, and spoke of his delight at the move.

He said: "I'm going to Liverpool with all the enthusiasm in the world. I can't wait to play my first game and if it was against Manchester United then it couldn't be any better."

He also revealed that other clubs were interested in signing him, including Lyon, who made a late bid of £6million yesterday, but that Liverpool was always his first choice destination.

"I am grateful the club have accepted my wishes to go to Liverpool rather than other better offers they could have had. All I can say is thanks to all the clubs who were interested. One of them was Lyon, but when their offer came in I had given my word to Liverpool."

Morientes was last season's top scorer in the Champions League, a competition he has won three times with Real Madrid, but having played in the competition for Real this season, he will be unable to feature in any of Liverpool's remaining Champions League games this season.
