17.08.2004 - Gerrard starts but no place for Carra

Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard will start in tommorow's England friendly against Ukraine, after Sven Goran Eriksson announced his starting line up for the match.

Gerrard will win his 29th cap for his country at St James' Park, though there's no place in the eleven for Liverpool's other two members of the squad.

David James will start in goal ahead of Chris Kirkland, with the Liverpool 'keeper having to wait even longer to make his first appearance for the senior England team, while Ledley King has been selected to play in defence ahead of Jamie Carragher.

Carragher was an almost certain starter against France in Euro 2004, before a last minute u-turn by Eriksson gave King he chance to play instead.

And after King's impressive display during that game, the Tottenham player appears to have made it even more difficult for Carragher to break into the side, despite his impressive club form over the past few seasons.

The chances of Carragher or Kirkland appearing as a substitute also seem limited, due to Eriksson's suggestion that Jermaine Jenas, Kieron Dyer, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Jermain Defoe will be used in the second half, and FIFA's new rule stating that a maximum of 6 substitutes can be used in friendlies.

Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey is ruled out through injury, but there is a place for Michael Owen, who will play his first match on English soil since Liverpool's draw with Newcastle on the final day of last season.
