17.06.2004 - Gerrard on target in Swiss win

Steven Gerrard was on target tonight as England recorded a comfortable 3-0 victory in their second group B game of Euro 2004.

After their disappointing defeat to France, England started poorly in this game, with the Swiss on top for much of the opening quarter of the game. But a Wayne Rooney goal midway through the first half helped England settle into the game and England bossed much of the remainder of the match without really needing to get out of second gear.

A second goal from Rooney in the second half killed the game off, and Gerrard capped off an impressive individual performance with a late goal after combining well with Beckham and Neville. England can qualify for the last 8 with a draw against Croatia, and could even win the group with a win, providing that France also fail to beat Switzerland.
