Jamie Carragher has been called up to the England squad by Sven Goran Eriksson, less than a month after returning from long term injury.

The Reds full back has been in fine form since recovering from a broken leg, and could feature against Portugal in England's first friendly of the year as they prepare for this summer's European Championships.

Chris Kirkland is also included, despite not having played for Liverpool recently, due to injury, while Emile Heskey and Michael Owen will also travel.

Steven Gerrard has been rested to allow him to remain at home, where his girlfiend is expected to give birth in the next few days.

The England v Portgual match will take place on Wednesday evening.
