27.09.2003 - Rovers return for Reds as cup defence begins
Liverpool have been drawn away to Blackburn in the third round of the Carling Cup in what will be a potentially explosive cup tie.
The Reds won 3-1 on the same ground just 2 weeks ago but the result, and the fine performance by Liverpool on that day, was overshadowed by the injuries suffered by Milan Baros and Jamie Carragher, with a war of words between Souness and Houllier taking place throughout the following week due to the challenge by Lucas Neill which led to Carragher's injury.
And Liverpool now face a return to Ewood Park as they aim to retain the trophy which they won in March with a thrilling 2-0 win over Manchester United in Cardiff.
The two sides have met in the competition on two previous occasions. In 1987, Liverpool won 2-1 over two legs, winning 1-0 at Anfield after a 1-1 draw at Ewood Park, and a memorable hat-trick by Ian Rush helped the Reds to an excellent 3-1 win in the 1994-95 season, the year in which Blackburn went onto become Premiership Champions.
The last meeting in any cup competition was a 1-0 win to Blackburn at Anfield in a January 2000 FA Cup tie.
The upcoming Carling Cup clash will take place on October 28 or 29.
