25.08.2003 - Liverpool held in Villa clash
Liverpool earned their first Premiership point of the season, but they must wait a little longer for their first win after a 0-0 draw at Villa Park yesterday.
Harry Kewell should have put Liverpool ahead early in the first half when he volleyed wide from 12 yards out following a save by Thomas Sorensen from Diouf's initial shot, and the Danish 'keeper kept his side in it later in the half with a fine save from Danny Murphy's long range effort.
El Hadji Diouf was forced into a goalline clearance in Villa's best chance of the half and Juan Pablo Angel was inches away from opening the scoring in the second half when he fired a 25 yards free kick against the post, during a period of Villa dominance.
Liverpool gradually got back into the game though and could have won the game themselves but Sorensen again was the Aston Villa hero as he made another fantastic save from Riise's close range header.
A draw was a fair result, but Liverpool will need to improve on the performance if they're to become genuine title contenders, especially as they are already 5 points behind Man United, Arsenal and Chelsea.
LFC-1 Star Man: Jerzy Dudek.
