15.08.2003 - Gerrard hoping for big improvement

Steven Gerrard has admitted that he is still has a long way to go before he reaches his peak, but is hoping for a better season this time around, both from a personal point of view and also for the club as a whole.

"This club belongs in the Champions League, and after playing in it for two seasons, I feel I belong there too. That's why we were so disappointed to miss out, but it has gone now," Gerrard said.

"I think our prospects are better than a year ago. Harry will bring a lot to the attacking side, and Steve defensively."

The Reds midfielder will miss Sunday's opener against Chelsea which he says is a 'big disappointment', but he is looking forward to the season and claims that Liverpool can finish in the top 3, but only if the players improve results at Anfield.

"We've got to improve our home form and if we do that, I think we can finish in the top three."

Gerrard currently has just two years left on his contract with Liverpool, with talks regarding a new deal set to begin in the near future. And should the Reds persuade their influential midfielder to commit his long term future to the club, Liverpool will get to see the players' best days, with Gerrard admitting that he has years of improvement left in him.

"I have got a lot of developing to do. I'm only 23 and still learning and I still have a lot to prove," he said.

"My game has improved dramatically over the last few years but I think I can still get better. You don't reach a peak until you are 25 to 28, so I still have some way to go."

Gerrard will be available for selection for Liverpool's second Premiership match of the season, which is a week on Sunday away to Aston Villa.
