08.08.2003 - Fifth summer signing arrives at Anfield!

Carl Medjani today became Gerard Houllier's fifth addition to the Liverpool squad, after signing on a free transfer from French Second Divisin side, St Etienne.

Medjani has been a target of Houllier's since early February, though the 18-year-old centre back was expected to remain in France, where he was expected to sign for one of the country's biggest clubs.

But Liverpool today confirmed the signing, beating off competition from the likes of Man United and Arsenal in the process, and Medjani was quick to start work at Anfield when he took part in a training session in front of thousands of Liverpool fans who were in attendance. However, Medjani is not likely to take any part in tomorrow's friendly at home to Valencia.

Medjani will take Djimi Traore's old number 30 for the coming season.
