05.08.2003 - Friendly: Aberdeen 1-5 Liverpool
Liverpool came from behind to thrash Aberdeen in a game which was arranged as part of the Scottish club's centenary celebrations.
The Dons got off to the best possible start and were ahead after less than 2 minutes, thanks to a strike from close range by David Zrdilic. But Danny Murphy levelled things with Liverpool's first shot of the match with a right footed volley whih flew past the Aberdeen 'keeper.
Aberdeen rarely threatened Chris Kirkland's goal during an opening 45 minutes in which Liverpool were the better team, though the scores remained level until after the break, with Florent Sinama-Pongolle wasting Liverpool's best chance to take a lead into the interval when he failed with a penalty, which he himself had won.
Gerard Houllier's second half side was closer to the team which is likely to be his first choice line up, and the Reds' big names didn't disappoint during a second half display which saw them put another four goals past David Preece in the Dons' goal.
Emile Heskey netted the first of those, firing a powerful shot past Preece from a difficult angle just inside the Aberdeen penalty area after recieving the ball from Kewell. And the Aussie International was on the scoresheet with Liverpool's third goal, following great work by Owen who beat a number of Aberdeen defenders before laying the ball to Kewell and he made no mistake in scoring his first for the Reds.
Two goals from late substitute Neil Mellor put the finishing touches to an impressive win by Liverpool, and with the first team stars left with just one more game before the Premiership clash with Chelsea, Gerard Houllier will be hoping to finish the pre-season period well, with another win against Valencia at Anfield on Saturday.
