29.07.2003 - Hamann out until November
Dietmar Hamann was dealt a blow ahead of the start of the new season, when he suffered a recurrence of a shin injury which he picked up during last season.
Hamann was forced to undergo surgery on the injury at the end of last season, and missed the final game of the season at Stamford Bridge, though he appeared to have recovered well and the German has played a part in all of Liverpool's pre-season games so far.
However, on returning from the Far-East tour, Hamann suffered a recurrence of the injury and underwent surgery in Germany, with the Reds' star likely to be kept out until at least November.
With Gerrard suspended for the first match of the season, the two central midfield slots look set to be up for grabs and the news of Hamann's injury will be sure to alert the likes of Cheyrou and Diao, who will be hoping to continue their good pre-season form and stake a claim for a place in Gerard Houllier's line up when Chelsea visit Anfield on August 17.
