22.07.2003 - Reds' keepers hoping for successful seasons
Liverpool goalkeepers Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland are both hoping to be able to play their part in a successful Liverpool season, as the Reds aim to mount a serious title challenge and put the disappointment of last season behind them.
After a fantastic first season with the club, Jerzy Dudek failed to perform to his own high standards, and was the keeper who was resposible for the Premiership's most high profile goalkeeping blunder of last season at home to Man United.
The Pole was soon given a break from first team action though finished the season well, with a number of crucial saves in the final weeks of the season, and picked up his own personal trophy following the Worthington Cup Final win over United when he was named man of the match. And Dudek is hoping to make this season his best yet for the club.
"I have put last season to the back of my mind and now I want this season to be my best so far. That's my target," Dudek said.
He added: "I was trying to do my best last season but it wasn't working for me and I couldn't keep my standards high.
"Last season I didn't feel good after the training camp in Switzerland and now I do feel good. I am definitely ready mentally and physically for the new season. Now I feel much fresher and let's hope it stands me in good stead."
Chris Kirkland meanwhile is aiming to play a 'major part' in Liverpool's quest for honours this season.
The 'keeper, who is tipped to make the England number 1 shirt his own in the near future, saw his season cruelly ended in January, less than two months after he'd finally been given a lengthly spell at Liverpool's first choice goalkeeper.
But Kirkland has made a speedy recovery and is now playing again and hoping to force his way back into the Reds side.
"It was a tough season for sure," said the 22 year-old, "but the table doesn't lie and that regard there was certainly some cause for concern. I hope I can play a major part in this season's task of finishing higher and winning a Champions League spot."
