19.07.2003 - Friendly: Crewe Alexandra 1-1 Liverpool

Harry Kewell and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both came off with injuries as Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at Gresty Road this afternoon.

Kewell was withdrawn a few minutes before half time aftere picking up an earlier knock on his ankle, with the Australian set to have a scan tomorrow morning to find out whether he will be forced to face a spell on the sidelines.

David Vaughan put Crewe ahead after 19 minutes, heading the ball across Jerzy Dudek's goal and into the corner of the net from close range.

Liverpool had looked the brighter side though, and they continued to look the stringer of the two teams for much of the remainder of the game.

Harry Kewell looked lively and was unlucky not to score his first goal in a Liverpool shirt when he hit a 25 yard shot which crashed against the top of the bar.

Milan Baros and Michael Owen might have also had their names on the scoresheet with Owen in particular finding himself with a few chaces but only once was the keeper tested.

That was until the 44th minute though, when Crewe 'keeper Clayton Ince missed the ball when he attempted to claim John Arne Riise's corner kick, and Owen was on hand to head in Liverpool's equaliser.

Ince was later voted Crewe's man of the match by the sponsors and he was kept a little busier in the second half with his best save of the game required to keep out a ferocious volley by Cheyrou, and Crewe were lucky to hold onto a draw in the end.

The impressive Florent Sinama-Pongolle hit the post from a cross by Heskey just 10 minutes, and Heskey himself should have win the match for Liverpool in the final 5 minutes, when he struck a shot against the inside of the post after being played in by Cheyrou and left with only Crewe's young reserve keeper to beat.

Liverpool's next friendly in England is not until their home match with Valencia, with a tour of the Far East next up for the Reds, before games against Ajax and Galatasaray in the Amsterdam Tournament.
