29.01.2003 - Late Heskey header earns Reds a point

Emile Heskey sent a brilliant header into the back of the Arsenal net in injury time, to earn Liverpool a point against the league leaders in a thrilling match at Anfield.

Arsenal were in top form for most of the game, and went ahead through Rober Pires after less than 8 minutes, after a terrific pass from Bergkamp had played Thierry Henry through on goal and despite a good block by Dudek from Henry's shot, Pires was left with the simple task of putting the ball into an empty net and he made no mistake.

The Gunners had plenty of chances to double their lead, though Liverpool also could have scored a first half goal, with Michael Owen guilty of failing with two one on one chances against David Seaman.

But, as at Highbury earlier in the season, Liverpool looked stronger after the break and were level just minutes into the second half when Heskey held up the ball well in the area before setting up Riise for a shot from the edge of the area which the Norwegian fired beyond Seaman and into the bottom corner.

Both sides played some outstanding football for times during the half, particularly the visitors, and it was they who were next on the scoresheet, with a Dennis Bergkamp strike from 20 yards out taking a nasty deflection off Stephane Henchoz, which Jerzy Dudek despite his best efforts, was helpless to do anything about.

Though as time was running out for Liverpool, they won a controversial corner at the Kop end which was initially dealt with by the Arsenal defence, but Diao, on as a second half sub, whipped in a good cross from the right hand side, and Heskey rose above everyone to send a header into the bottom corner of the goal and rescue a late point for Liverpool.

Arsenal remain 14 points clear of Liverpool, with the Reds' now looking towards getting in the Champions League places after their mid season form virtually ended a realistic shot at the title. Liverpool's next game is away to West Ham on Sunday.
