14.08.2002 - Liverpool lose to Chester
Liverpool lost for the fourth time in five games last night as they went down 1-0 to non league side, Chester City.
Playing in their new home for reserve team games, Liverpool had the majority of the possesion throughout the match, but created few chances with possible the best chance of the night falling to Markus Babbel in the first half, though he headed over the bar with a free header from close range.
Patrick Berger was closest in the second half, firing a ferocious shot into the side netting, but as the game wore on, Chester grew in confidence and were rarely troubled in the later stages.
The only goal of the game came with around five minutes of the match remaining and was scored by Chris Blackburn. The Chester midfielder was on the end of a counter attack and rounded Pegguy Arphexad before sliding the ball into the net despite Stephen Warnock's attempts to get back and prevent the goal.
But for poor finishing, Chester would have added a second in the final minute, but in a game which celebrated 10 years at the Deva Stadium, the Nationwide Conference club will have been more than satisifed with the one goal win.
Liverpool: Kirkland (Arphexad), Carragher, Vignal, Warnock, Biscan, Babbel (Otsemobor), Smicer (Partridge), Diao (Sjolund), Baros (Mellor), Berger, Cheyrou (Diomede)
