22.06.2002 - Diouf, Diao feature in Senegal defeat

New Liverpool signings El Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao both appeared for their Country in the World Cup today, but were unable to help guide Senegal into the semi finals as the African nation went down 1-0 to Turkey.

After dominating the early chances and possesion, Senegal were forced to defend for much of the remainder of the game, with the Turks squandering numerous chances to win the match in normal time.

But Turkey substitute Ilhan Mansiz, who replaced Hakan Sukur, was the man who broke the deadlock in the 3rd minute of extra time, ending a remarkable run by Senegal which had seen them eliminate the current World Champions, France, and also knock out Uraguay and Sweden en-route to the last eight.

The defeat means that Liverpool have just one player still in the World Cup, with Dietmar Hamann's Germany taking on South Korea in the first of next weeks semi final games.
