Dietmar Hamann returned from his one match suspension as Germany recorded a narrow win over the USA to make it through to the World Cup semi finals.

Michael Ballack scored the only goal of the game, but Germany were forced to defend for much of the contest, and were thankful to goalkeeper Oliver Kahn on many occasions for keeping the Americans out.

Germany will now face the winners of Spain v South Korea, which takes place tomorrow morning.
