Liverpool bound Salif Diao played the whole of Senegal's first World Cup game, where they came out 1-0 winners against the holders, France.

Diao, playing opposite Patrick Vieira, put in a good performance as his country caused the first shock of the tournament by beating the favourites.

Two other players who have strongly been linked with Liverpool also played in the match. Senegal's African Player of the Year, El Hadji Diouf, played the full 90 minutes, while Auxerre's French striker, Djibril Cisse, was brought on to play the last 10 minutes of the game.
