09.05.2002 - Carragher to miss World Cup
Jamie Carragher will miss this year's World Cup Finals after being left out of the England squad which has just been announced.
Carragher has had another excellent season in Liverpool's back four, and due to his versatility, he was expected to be in the squad to travel to the Far East. But Eriksson, who was at Anfield last night, has dropped Carragher in favour of Leeds United's Danny Mills, and gave the last defensive positions to Arsenal's Martin Keown and Man United's Wes Brown.
There was further disappointment for Danny Murphy who was also omitted from the squad, although Murphy has been placed on standby and will be added should an injury force another member of the squad to pull out.
Michael Owen, Steve Gerrard and Emile Heskey were all included, as expected. The full squad is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Seaman (Arsenal), Martyn (Leeds), James (West Ham)
Defenders: Ferdinand (Leeds), Campbell (Arsenal), Southgate (Middlesbrough), Ashley Cole (Arsenal), Bridge (Southampton), Mills (Leeds), Brown (Man Utd), Keown (Arsenal)
Midfielders: Beckham (Man Utd), Scholes (Man Utd), Gerrard (Liverpool), Dyer (Newcastle), Butt (Man Utd), Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Joe Cole (West Ham)
Forwards: Owen (Liverpool), Heskey (Liverpool), Vassell (Aston Villa), Fowler (Leeds), Sheringham (Tottenham)
