Michael Owen was this afternoon named as the 2001 European Footballer of the Year. Owen is the first Englishman to win the award since Kevin Keegan in 1979. Raul came second, 36 points behind Owen and German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn, who Owen scored past 4 times in 8 days earlier in the year, came third. Liverpool's 3 nominated players were all among those who recieved votes, with Sami Hyypia coming in joint 18th position with equal points as those recieved by Mendieta among others, while Steve Gerrard came equal 25th, recieving the same number of votes as Roberton Baggio and Rui Costa.
