LFC-1's player of the year, Sami Hyypia, has been named as the best Premiership defender of the season by Opta, who collect detailed information about every aspect of a player's performance during the season. The Finn beat off competition by Ian Harte, Tony Adams and Marcel Desailly.
In the same statistics, Micheal Owen was the number one striker over the season with teammate Emile Heskey in 6th place. Steven Gerrard came third of all midfielders behind Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira, with McAllister (6th place) and Hamann (8th) also in the top 10. Goalkeeper Sander Westerweld just managed a place in the top 10 but was a long way behind the best performing keeper in the league, Fabien Barthez.
