06.10.2001 - Liverpool players qualify for World Cup finals
England qualified for next year's World Cup Finals with a 2-2 draw against Greece today. With almost the entire team performing poorly and with England trailing for most of the game, it took a 93rd minute equaliser courtesy of a free kick by David Beckham to guarantee that England would win the group. Gerrard, Fowler, Barmby and Heskey played in the match. Elsewhere, Germany drew 0-0 with Finland, with Jari Litmanen and Sami Hyypia playing their part. That result ensured that a draw by England would be good enough. In other groups featuring Liverpool players, Jerzy Dudek's Poland drew 1-1 with Ukraine, although Poland had alreasy won the group before today. the Czech Republic could also be going to the finals, but will have to face Belgium in a play off decider. Neither Patrick Berger, nor Vladimir Smicer played in their amazing 6-0 win over Bulgaria, who were ahead of the Czech's before the game. John Arne Riise will miss out on the finals though, despite Norway's 4-1 away win to Armenia. It was only his country's second win in 10 qualifying games. But another Liverpool player who will certainly be at the World Cup is Igor Biscan, after Croatia beat Belgium to top spot with a 1-0 win. The play-off matches will take place in November.
