Dinamo Kiev 1-2 Liverpool
Liverpool became the first English club to beat Dinamo Kiev on their own pitch as they did the double over the Ukranians and moved closer to the next round of the Champions League.
Kiev started well, looking to attack from the moment the game kicked off, and it was the home side who claimed the first good chance of the match with a free kick that was well saved by Dudek. The Polich keeper was forced into making a number of saves during the opening half, with Kiev looking dangerous throughout, but it was Liverpool who went into the interval with an advantage.
Following an early header by Heskey which caused problems in the Dinamo defence, and a wild shot by Smicer which was well over after he had done well to get himself into space, which had been Liverpool's main opportunities in the first half, Murphy fired home from close range. The move began with a Kiev free-kick just outside the area, from which Cernat went close. But Liverpool immediately responded and Steve Gerrard was quick to get the ball forward to Murphy, who coolly netted his second goal in successive games.
The hosts came out in the second half looking slightly less lively but still managed to get back into the game early on. Thiberiu Ghioane was the man to get the equaliser, and the goal took just 14 minutes of the second half to arrive. But Liverpool kept at it and within 8 minytes, they were back in front.
Steve Gerrard, had the final say on the match though, with a great strike on 67 minutes which left the keeper with no chance, and quietened the home crowd who were in full voice following Dinamo's goal.
Cernat came close to equalising for a second time with a shot which was just wide in the last minute, and also had a goal disallowed in injury time for offside.
In the other Group B game, Boavista were beaten 2-1 in the Westfalonstadion against Borussia Dortmund to allow Liverpool to move into top place in the group.
