Yeovil 0-2 Liverpool
Goals from Emile Heskey and Danny Murphy ensured that Liverpool will be in tomorrow's FA Cup 4th round draw, after a controversial cup tie at Huish Park.
Yeovil Town were the opponents, and the third division side were seen by many to be the team most likely to cause a 3rd round upset, and their chances of doing so looked good after a first half in which Jerzy Dudek was the busier of the two goalkeepers.
But Liverpool were on top of the game for much of the second half, and the introduction of Emile Heskey shortly after the break was to be the game's turning point.
Heskey's pace and strength caused problems for Yeovil's defence and the big striker almost scored within a minute of entering the action, though saw his low shot well saved.
Vladimir Smicer also came close to opening the scoring when his 20 yard effort clipped the inside of the post.
Liverpool continued to pile pressure on Yeovil and that paid off in the 70th minute, when Heskey fired a low shot across the keeper and inside the far post, following excellent play by Murphy, who picked out a couple of one-twos to cut through the Yeovil midfield before threading an accurate ball through to Heskey.
It was nothing more than Liverpool's second half performance deserved, and Murphy himself was to seal the win via the penalty spot, after a controversial decision involving Harry Kewell, who appeared to dive at the edge of the box.
With ten minutes to go, Yeovil piled men forward, but managed to test Dudek just once, with Liverpool's defence coping well whenever the home side attacked, and despite their efforts, they never looked likely to get back into the game following Murphy's goal.
The draw for the 4th round will take place at lunchtime tomorrow.
