Liverpool 2-1 Charlton Athletic
Late goals from Sami Hyypia and Steven Gerrard earned Liverpool a vital win against Charlton on Monday, moving them to just 2 points away from 3rd place in the Premiership table.
Following a poor first half of football, Charlton took an early lead from the restart, with Shaun Bartlett capitalising on a slip by Traore on the edge of the Liverpool penalty area, and despite Dudek's best attempts to send the ball wide, Bartlett's shot clipped the inside of the post and Liverpool were left with it all to do.
And they left it late, but a Sami Hyypia goal scrambled over the line from a corner on 86 minutes gave the Reds hope, and with the crowd in the home support in voice, Liverpool immediately went in search of a dramatic winner.
But it was almost Charlton who went away with all three points, with Jerzy Dudek called into action with just a minute on the clock, after substitute Jason Euell powered a header towards the top corner from close range, though a truly world class save from Dudek kept the ball out.
Liverpool dealt with the resulting corner, and went straiht up the other end of the pitch where Steven Gerrard took the ball into the left hand corner before beating three Charlton players on his way into the area, and a low shot into the bottom corner of the goal beat Dean Keily and won the game for Liverpool in the most dramatic fashion.
In other results, Chelsea won 4-1 against Everton to move into third place, ahead of Newcastle who dropped two points at home to struggling Aston Villa. Liverpool are now just a point from a Champions League place, and a further point behind Chelsea with each club having just three more games to play.
